Rise in Pensioners Facing Homelessness

In recent months we have been extremely concerned about the number of pensioners who are presenting as homeless in the North Coast area. This includes, John, an 83 year old man who came to us for support when his landlord informed him he wanted to sell the property.

John was referred to us by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive after he presented to them as homeless.

John told us: “So many private landlords are selling up. I never expected that this would be my story. I was a tenant for 10 years and was gobsmacked by the news that the house was for sale.”

Working in conjunction with the dedicated staff of the Causeway office of the Housing Executive we were able to provide John with the help he needed, and he has now been rehoused in an apartment within our Compassion Housing scheme.

John said: “If it hadn't been for my friends at Vineyard Compassion, I would be on the sand dunes living in a tent"

Our Chief Executive, Ricky Wright said:

“On the North Coast there has been a massive rise in rental properties sold for holiday homes or Air B&Bs, which have left long term renters homeless due to the shortage of other rental options. It is also clear that people on fixed incomes such as pensioners are struggling with the rising cost of rent.

Lack of availability as well as increasing rental costs, set against the context of the cost-of-living crisis, are creating a perfect storm for our pensioners. If you or anyone you know is in need of support, we are here to help.”
